How to manage and recover from knee pain

Written by Melina Klein | Mar 2, 2020

Knee pain is a common issue that many will experience, especially when training is increasing, such as within marathon training. Causes of knee pain can a direct collision, or something that gets progressively worse over a period of time and starts to impact your ability to train.

While the knee is a fairly small and simple joint, pain here can be caused by a number of different factors. Where and when the pain felt can help to identify what could be causing your pain, but no matter where it is felt, there can be a few simple ways to try and settle the pain:

  • Load management
  • Single leg strength
  • Foot/ ankle strength

Load management – Make sure your training intensity/ load over the week doesn’t increase or decrease too quickly, otherwise your body cannot recover or adapt to desired training load.

Single leg strength – Increasing your bodies ability to do more on one leg, under control, will strengthen your run and reduce your injury risk. When running distance/ speeds are increased, the body can sometimes struggle to keep up with this demand. Increasing your glute and hamstring can help to combat this.

Foot/Ankle strength – Your feet have a lot to do with how your legs move when running, and as above, increasing the strength and control here will make your move more efficiently when running.

Here at The Treatment Room we can assess your knee and identify what is causing the pain and work on getting you back to your training routine as quickly as possible. Whether you are currently in pain, have had pain previously or simply wish to reduce your injury risk, our therapists are here to help.
